The Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. This festival carries deep cultural significance and has a rich history that dates back thousands of years.

One of the most well-known stories about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival is related to Chang'e, a legendary figure in Chinese mythology. According to legend, Chang'e was the wife of Hou Yi, an archer who shot down nine extra suns, saving humanity from extreme heat. As a reward for his bravery, the Queen Mother of the West gave him the elixir of immortality. However, instead of drinking it himself, Hou Yi entrusted the potion to Chang'e for safekeeping. Unfortunately, one day, a thief tried to steal the elixir, but Chang'e, unwilling to let it fall into the wrong hands, swallowed it herself. Immediately, she ascended to the moon and became its immortal resident. To honor her sacrifice and express their longing for reunion, people began offering sacrifices to the moon during this time.

Another tale involves Wu Gang, a woodcutter who offended the gods and was punished by being forced to cut down a magical cassia tree on the moon. The tree would heal itself every time he chopped it, ensuring that his punishment was eternal. This story symbolizes perseverance and the cyclical nature of life.

The festival's roots can also be traced back to ancient agricultural traditions. Farmers celebrated the harvest season around this time of year, expressing gratitude for a bountiful yield. The full moon served as a symbol of completeness and unity, reminding families to gather together and celebrate their shared prosperity.

Today, the Mid-Autumn Festival remains a cherished occasion for family reunions. People enjoy mooncakes, a sweet pastry filled with various fillings such as lotus seed paste or red bean paste, while admiring the beautiful moon. Lanterns are lit, and children often play games under the glow of the night sky. The festival not only preserves ancient customs but also strengthens bonds among loved ones, making it a meaningful celebration for both tradition and modern times.
